Real Pioneer of County Summoned
Mrs. Eliza Van Hook Dies at Maxwell
Mrs. Eliza Ann VanHook, one of the real pioneers of Marshall county, passed away at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the home of a grandson, W.E. Van Hook, in Maxwell, where she had been visiting for the past six weeks. Death was due to pneumonia.
Mrs. Van Hook had been a resident of Marshall county for 81 years but she had been at the home of a son, William Van Hook, at Des Moines since the first of April.
Mrs. Van Hook was born Eliza Ann Goshon, in Henry county, Illinois, May 19, 1850. In 1854 she came to Iowa with her parents, making the trip overland in a covered wagon. The family settled in the Ferguson neighborhood.
She was married to Thomas Van Hook, in Marshalltown, Nov. 16, 1871. Mr. and Mrs. Van Hook were the parents of three children, William Calvin Van Hook, Des Moines, and Mrs. James H. Brown and John Thomas Van Hook of Marshalltown. Mr. Van Hook died Aug. 28, 1876.
In addition to the children, Mrs. Van Hook is survived by four half-brothers and sisters. They are Sylvester and William Goshon of Gilman, John Goshon of Long Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Sadie Cuttingham of Donna, Texas. Another sister, Mrs. Elmina White, died in Oklahoma.
Mrs. Van Hook was a lifelong member of the Friends Church.
The funeral will be held from the Pursel funeral home at 1:30 o'clock Friday afternoon, in charge of Rev. Carl E. Byrd, pastor of the Friends church. Burial will be in Riverside cmetery.
