Josephine was the daugther of Jane Throckmorton and Peter Roosevelt Roach. When her mother died during childbirth of her second child in 1832, Josephine was given to Jane's sister - Catherine Throckmorton - who was single at that time. When Catherine married William VanHook 4 years later, he and Catherine adopted Josephine.

"Josephine Throckmorton Roach, b. 9 June 1830, Beekman St., New York City, next door to old St. George Church. Named for her mother's favorite brother, Joseph Throckmorton. Owing to the early death of her mother and the remarriage of her father, she was adopted by her uncle, William Van Hook, and at his death became his sole heir. Her accomplishments in language and music made her young life a brilliant one in New York and Newport society. It was her custom to accompany her uncle on many of his legal business trips to the principal cities of the U.S. and Canada and in this way she had unusual opportunities for seeing and meeting many of the prominent persons of ante bellum days. Especially was this true in Washington where, by reason of having relatives in the Navy, she was able to take part in the social life of both official and diplomatic circles. She married 7 Oct 1856, Gulian Hook, at 5 Fifth Ave. New York (her uncle's house). The wedding was a large and fashionable one with 470 guests. Gulian Hook, b. Fishkill on the Hudson, NY, 27 Nov 1822, son of John Crane Hook and Elizabeth Henrietta Schmaltz..."
