    • Thomas VanHook was an attorney, Clerk of the first Union Parish Police Jury on May 16, 1839, Clerk of Court of the 17th Judicial District 1846, and served in the State Legislature from 1846 until his death. Prior to 1839 he went to Texas where he ran mustangs north of Austin. He received an arrow wound and was reported to have coughed up the arrow spike at the time of his death. He insisted that his wife learn to read and write. A journal exists that was kept by him. He liked to hunt. A history of Union Parish notes that he killed a deer in 1838 on the site of the future Union Parish Courthouse.
