    Married:
    • 24 Nov 1830 - Elkanah VanHook was the surety on his sister Peninah's marriage bond to Jehu (John) Chadwick in 1830 in Harrison Co., KY

Elkanah VanHook & John R. Blair (surety) bond for Elkanah VanHook & Nancy Ann Blair marriage

11 Jan 1832 Harrison Co., KY Marriages
Elkanah VanHook & Nancy Ann Blair married by George Marshall, minister of the Gospel

Nancy Ann Blair was most likely a sister of the "John R. Blair" in the above marriage bond, and a sister to "Joseph H. Blair" in the 1850 US Census record (see below).

About 1835, Elkanah VanHook and family moved to Boone County, IN (just northwest of Indianapolis). Boone County was being settled at this time, with 40 acre tracts of land being sold by the government. Elkanah purchased some of these tracts, and also acted as a land agent on some - he was essentially speculating in land. Some of this land was bought on credit, and by the mid-1840's Elkanah defaulted on some of the debt. A couple of tracts were "foreclosed" and auctioned off on 7 Jun 1845.

From the 1840 census record, it appears Elkanah and Nancy Ann had 3 daughters and 1 son.

Elkanah was the postmaster at Lebanon, Boone County, Indiana appointed 5 Feb 1845 - he was paid $26.05 for the job that year.

It's unclear when Nancy Ann Blair VanHook died - but it was probably in the 1840's. By the late 1840's, Elkanah moved to Cincinnati - where he died in 1849 (this is from the biographical narrative of his daughter, Sarah Elwyn VanHook Franklin). His son James Henry VanHook could not be located in the 1850 US Census, but his daughter Sarah appears to be living with an Uncle and Aunt.

      1850 United States Federal - District 48, Lewis, Missouri (19 Aug 1850)
      Name Age
      Joseph H Blair 43, b KY, farmer
      Matilda Blair 41, b KY
      Sarah E Vanhook 17, b KY

It appears Sarah may be living with an uncle and aunt in the 1850 census. Joseph Blair is possibly brother to Sarah's mother - Nancy Blair. Joseph and Matilda Blair must have moved to the Cincinnati area shortly after this census. They appear in Covington, Kenton Co., KY in the 1860 census. Sarah E. VanHook was married in Kenton County in 1853 to Joseph King.
