    Notes
    Married:
    • Artimace VanHook, daughter of Samuel VanHook and Isabella Cox was born about 1826 in Pulaski County, Kentucky. Artimace married Squire Surber, son of Adam Surber Jr. and Nancy Stewart, on 16 January 1845 in Pulaski Co., Ky. [marriage bonds, book 1, page 164]. The surety on the bond was Fountain F. Surber. Consent of father, Adam Surber, for "my son to marry the daughter of the widow Vanhook". Consent of Esibell Vanhook, mother of the bride. Squire Surber was born 12 May 1824. Squire and Artemace are mentioned in the settlement of her father's estate in 1873 [Pulaski Co., Ky. Deeds, volume 27, page 296].

Apparently Squire Surber and Artimace VanHook apparently ha
d no children of their own - from the census records they may have adopted a girl named Margaret Henegar (she is listed as a "ward" in the 1880 census). It's unclear who this girl is. There was a Margaret Henegar, daughter of George and Louvina Henegar, that appears in the 1860 Ohio census that may be a fit.

Squire Surber is believed to be buried in Freedom Cemetery on North Highway 1247 in Pulaski Co., Ky. He died 13 February 1898. There is another Squire Surber also buried in this cemetery, born 22 March 1828 and died 6 November 1882. This other Squire Surber was the son of Hiram Surber and Deniza Burton, was married to Rebecca Bryant and had a number of children.
