    Notes
    Married:
    • MARTIN VANHOOK, son of Samuel VanHook was born about 1780 in Washington County (later Russell County) Virginia.

By 1802 Martin had moved to Nicholas County, Ky. near his brothers Archelaus and Abner. From about 1809 to 1813 he may haved lived somewhere else as he disappears from the tax lists in Nicholas at that time and is not in the 1810 census. Martin may have been living with his father, Samuel, during this time. He shows back up in the Nicholas tax lists in 1814 and then moved a year later to Harrison County, Ky.

Martin married Sarah (or "Sally") Hardin, daughter of Elihu(e) Hardin, on 15 August 1815 in Nicholas Co., Ky. They were married by Thomas Metcalf. The marriage bond reads, "Know all men by these presents that Mr. Martin Vanhook & Elihue Hardin are held and firmly bound by the Commonwealth of Kentucky in the
just and full sum of 50 pounds current money which payment is well and truly to be made... 9 Augt. 1815... between the above bound Mr. M. Vanhook and Miss Sally Hardin." Sarah also had a sister Elizabeth. Sarah's father, Elihu, must have been a man of some means as he owned 4 slaves (as shown in the 1820 census).

Martin served in the 13th regiment, Captain C.A. Collier's company, during the War of 1812. His brothers Archelaus and Abner were also in this company. Martin died about 1832 in Harrison Co., Ky. His brothers Archelaus and Abner, and his wife Sarah were adminstrators of his estate. Harrison County Court Order Book E, pages 248, 259, and 361, Administrators and Appraisers are appointed; Inventory Record in Will Book page 501; Sale Bond page 530; Estate settled Order Book E, pages 404 and 486.

Sarah apparently never remarried and she died about 1844. The administrator of her estate was her son-in-law, David Raymond. Harrison County Court Order Book J, pages 49, 110, and 169. Inventory Recorded Will Book E page 135, Sale Bond page 162.

Martin and Sarah had at least 8 children, 4 male and 4 female (as shown in census records), but many of their children apparently died young. I only know of two daughters: Mary Ann, b. 1822, m. David Hickman Raymond 24 September 1840, d. 25 March 1881, and Winnifred, b. 1824
