    Notes
    Married:
    • BENJAMIN FRANKLIN VANHOOK, oldest child of Martin VanHook and Eleanor Thompson was born 24 January 1830 in Pulaski County, Kentucky. This is the birthdate as shown on Benjamin's tombstone.

Benjamin married Lydia Jane Reynolds 27 August 1851 in Pulaski County, Kentucky. Lydia was born 25 July 1829 as given on her tombstone. They were married by the Rev. Martin Owens. Their marriage was never recorded in the county records, but it can be found in the records of the Rev. Owens. (These records are in the possession of some of Owens descendants, and are listed in Kentucky Ancestors, Vol. 8, page 60.)

Benjamin and his family lived in Pulaski County continuously. In the 1880 census they are shown as living in the Woodstock district. Late in life, Lydia Jane was placed in a "home" in Mt. Vernon, Ky., suffering from mental health problems. After her death, the closed coffin was sent to the from the "home" with instructions not to open it (this according to Charles Fred VanHook). After his wife died in 1897, Benjamin lived with his son, Benjamin Jr., and is listed in their household in the 1900 census.

Benjamin lived to be 80 years old, and during his later years he had a quite a long beard. He went to Missouri with his children in the early 1900's and attended the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis. While he was there he had his portrait made and a picture taken with some of his children. According to Fred VanHook, Benjamin's grandson, he ran a legal still making whiskey for a time.

Benjamin died 26 February 1910 and is buried in the Friendship Church cemetery on highway 461 in Rockcastle Co., Ky. (near the Pulaski-Rockcastle County line). His wife had died 13 years earlier, 12 August 1897, and is buried next to him. Benjamin's children were members of Friendship church and buried their father there. The church is no longer standing, but the cemetery is still used and is well maintained.
