    Notes
    Married:
    • Martin VanHook, son of Benjamin VanHook and Susannah Higgins was born in Pulaski County, Kentucky, 09 August 1809, as given in his father's Bible that was in possession of Dr. Samuel Munson of Springfield, Illinois, in the 1930's. It also agrees with his age as shown in all census records.

Martin's wife, Eleanor Thompson, was born about 1812. They were married by 1829. Their marriage record has not been found. Martin died after 1870. Supposedly he is buried in eastern Pulaski Co., KY on the Plano-VanHook Road in a little cemetery. His stone says "Martin L. V." and the owner of the land confirmed the cemetery was "VanHook's".

Family tradition says that 5 sons of this family served in the civil war, 2
on the Confederate side and 3 on the Union side. The records of Kentuckians
in the war most certainly confirm Joseph C. and Andrew as serving under the
Confederate flag, Company C (Captain M.B. Perkins Co.), Sixth Kentucky Cavalry
(Grigsby's Regiment). They both enlisted 13 September 1862 at Somerset, Ky.

That leaves the other brothers for the Union. I have been unable to
confirm any of their service, if it exists. The only Benjamin Vanhook listed
in Kentucky Union lists was in Company A, 12th Kentucky Infantry. He joined
15 October 1861 at Somerset, and died at Tuscambia, Alabama, 28 July 1862. No
Micajah can be found. As to Martin (Jr.), there was a Sargeant Martin Vanhook
in Company G, 19th Kentucky Infantry, but he was a son of Samuel VanHook and
      Isabell Cox.

There was a Private James Vanhook in Company B, 12th Kentucky Infantry,
enlisted at Camp Hoskins, Pulaski County, Ky., 12 October 1861. He never
actually joined his company, being sick in the hospital at Somerset, and died
2 April 1862. This could be the James shown above. There was a Private
George Vanhook enlisted in Company G, 13th Kentucky Cavalry, 13 August 1863 in Pulaski County. His age at this time was given as 30, so he could not be the
George shown above. The other sons were probably too young to have served and
no records can be found that could apply to them.

After John Lewis Van Hook (Martin's younger brother) died in 1912, his widow Mary Jane Hunter (VanHook) lived from time to time with her relatives. She would visit Andrew Jackson (Andy), James (Jimmy), George, and John Mason, the sons of Martin (1809-1910) and Eleanor Van Hook. Jimmy, George and John seemed to be elderly Gentlemen living and farming together. In Mary's letters they are mentioned as "The Boys."

1850 - Pulaski Co., Ky., Census, page 47 - Shows Martin's occupation as farmer
and he has property worth $600. The following names and ages are given (all

and Eleanor his wife sold to William Price 200 acres on Buck Creek for $400
