    Notes
    Married:
    • In 1853, a few years after Henry died in 1847, his widow Matilda and her 8 young children migrated from Rockcastle Co., KY to Sangamon Co., IL to seek a farm and to avoid the then raging pro-anti slavery issue. Settling her family estate and selling the Kentucky farm while in Illinois involved several years of legal controversy. It brought $400.

Narrated by elderly John VanHook at Marshalltown, IA in 1939:

His grandmother, Matilda VanHook, with 8 children aged 5 to 14 migrated from Kentucky to Illinois with great courage and hardship. They had a few possessions, 2 cows and an ox cart. She had corresponded with an Illinois attorney, Abraham Lincoln, for instructions and advice. Some roads or trails were not public and required payment of toll to land owners. She visited a son and died in Marshall County, Iowa on September 28, 1872.
