  • Notes  Married:
    • Joseph ("Joedy") Farmer came to the Poplarville area of Pulaski Co., KY in the early 1800's. It is said by many that Joseph was the first Farmer to come to Pulaski Co., KY. He married Sarah Baker there about 1807; Sarah's maiden name is in dispute - others have reported her name as Sarah Ann Edwards, or even Sarah Cush.

In the death certificate of Joseph & Sarah's youngest son Stephen Langford Farmer, her name is given as "Sarah Baker," with Joseph's name shown as "Joda." This information, given "by phone" at the end of February 1915 by Joseph & Sarah's grandson Eli Farmer appears to be the best evidence for "Baker." Eli was born in January of 1857, and his grandmother Sarah died in the 1860's, so it is possible he remembers knowing her. The Farmer descendents born in the late 1800's and early 1900's always referred to Joseph as "Joedy Farmer."

Joseph and Sarah had at least 11 children.

1810 US Census, Pulaski Co., KY - PG 45
Joseph Farmer (note - index incorrectly lists name as "Harmer")
      1 male under 10 - John
      1 male 16 thru 25 - Joseph
      2 females under 10 - 2 daughters - names unknown
      1 female 16 thru 25 - Sarah

1820 US Census, Pulaski Co., KY - family does not appear

1830 US Census, Pulaski Co., KY - PG 25
      Joseph Farmer
      1 male under 5 - William
      1 male 5 but under 10 - Joel
      2 males 10 but under 15 - John & James Wesley
1 male 50 but under 60 - Joseph (age must be coded wrong)
      2 females under 5 - Amanda Jane + 1 dau
      1 female 5 but under 10 - Amanda Jane & Rachel
      1 female 10 but under 15 - Malinda
      2 females 15 but under 20 - 2 daughters - names unknown
      1 female 40 but under 50 - Sarah

1840 US Census, Pulaski Co., KY - PG 301A
      Joseph Farmer
      1 male under 5 - Stephen Langford
      1 male 5 to 10 - Thomas
      1 male 10 to 15 - William
      1 male 20 to 30 - Joel A.
      1 male 50 to 60 - Joseph
      1 female 10 to 15 - Amanda Jane
      1 female 30 to 40 - Sarah

In the 1840 census, Joseph and family are living next door to his son James and wife Celia. Supposedly, about 1850 Joseph and Sarah were divorced. Joseph doesn't appear in the 1850 census with his first family.

1850 US Census, Division 1, Pulaski Co., KY - PG 62
Sarah Farmer, 58, b. North Carolina
Thomas, 19, b. KY (married Paulina Whitaker)
Stephen, 16, b. KY (married Ellen / Nellie Poynter)
      Alsa, 13, b. KY
      Marrima, 12, b. KY

Sarah and her 2 sons were living next door to her son James and her daughter Amanda Jane Farmer (Mills) in the 1850 census. It is unclear who these other 2 girls (Alsa and Marrima) are in the 1850 census record.

It's unclear as to what relationship Joseph had with his children by Sarah. With the exception of his daughter, Amanda Jane, none of his children named a single one of their children "Joseph." It's unusual for a father's name not to be passed down to his grandchildren.

According to Georgia Wells West: James Wesley Farmer, Joseph's son kept a family bible and he had a lot of dates written in it. For Joseph he wrote: "Joseph (Joedy) Farmer born in Va. He come to Pulaski Co. at an early age bringing with him his wife Sara born 1785 in North Carolina. They are parents of 8 children. They got divorced about 1850 and Joedy then married an Indian girl named Susan Sweet and they had one son Joseph (Blue Joe) Farmer. He married Dulcie Cash dau. of Leonard Cash. He goes on to list the children of Sarah."

After Joseph and Sarah divorced, Joseph settled with a woman named Susan Sweet. It's unclear whether Joseph and Susan were legally married, as she appears with her name of "Sweet" in the 1850 census living with Joseph, along with her 2 sons.

1850 US Census, Division 2, Pulaski Co., KY - PG 139
Joel Farmer, age 55, b. KY
Susan Sweet, age 21, b. KY
John Sweet, age 3, b. KY
Owen Sweet, age 1, b. KY

This "Joel" in the 1850 census is assumed to be "Joseph" (his son, Joel A. Farmer is also listed in this census, age 33, in a different household). The age (55) is 10 years younger than Joseph and shows a KY birthplace instead of NC. This household is located in a different part of Pulaski County than Poplarville. (This family was living next door to Thomas Perkins Ashley and Elizabeth Vaught Ashley).

According to Joseph's son (John Wesley Farmer), Joseph and Susan Sweet had 1 son (Joseph "Blue Joe" Farmer, born in 1851). However, in the 1860 census, Joseph is listed with 2 young children - neither of them "Blue Joe". In the 1860 census Joseph was living next to his son Stephen Langford Farmer.

1860 US Census, District 1, Pulaski Co., KY - PG 211
Joseph Farmer, 74, b. North Carolina, $500 real estate, $100 personal estate
      Eli, 4, b. KY
      Jane, 2, b. KY

It is assumed that these 2 children (Eli and Jane) are the son and daughter of Joseph and Susan Sweet. I've also seen note of a son William, born in 1854 (although this would be odd as Joseph Farmer and Sarah had a son William born about 30 years earlier). No information on what happened to Eli, Jane or this William. Also, no additional information on Susan Sweet's 2 sons - John and Owen Sweet. (See the entry for Susan Sweet for more information on her)

There is a stone in Poplarville Cemetery that reads Joseph Farmer 1785 - 1860. This stone is a memorial placed at Poplarville by Lurlene Mounce. "Joedy" is not buried at Poplarville cemetery; His final resting place is on a farm at Friendship, KY now owned by one of his great, great, great, grandsons. Others have noted that he was buried on a "mountain" near Poplarville.

Sarah died sometime after 1860 (in the 1860 Census, she was living with her son William Farmer. Her age at that time was given as 66). Another stone at Poplarville Cemetery reads Sarah Farmer 1788 - 1855. The stone is a memorial placed at Poplarville by Lurlene Mounce. Sarah is not buried at Poplarville cemetery; It is speculated she is buried in a much smaller family cemetery located on the banks of Buck Creek on a farm presently owned by Theodore Meece.
