1 NOTE Note: I and others think his family came from PA, probalbyLancaster Co., but have been unable to find the connection. NT

When Martin Wolford died 1780 his will named wife Eleanor andchildren Jacob, John and Elizabeth. Eleanor remarried to GeorgeReynolds Sr. About ten years later the children and spouses soldthe 3 lots in town and the farm. The papers show Vandiver Banksand wife Elizabeth selling her part. Also John and "Janey"Wolford appointed George Reynolds their Power of Attny to selltheirs and Jacob took the farm. Jacob later lived with theReynolds.

Another early Wolford in Pennsylvania was the Rev. MichaelWohlfahrt who tried to reform the Lutheran Church. The churchdenounced him as a heretic and recommended that he be sent backto Holland, but he was not sent back. Born in Memel, Prussia in1687, he had done missionary work as far south as NorthCarolina. After being denounced by the Lutherans he became aDunkard or Seventh Day Adventist and was a co-worker with ConradBeissel in the Ephrata Cloister (Ephrata PA) where he died in1741. We have not found proof he had a family, but he wasclosely associated with the widow Eckerle, whatever thatsignifies. Johann Marthin Wolfhardtt purchased lot #81 in thetown of Meshlenberg (now Sheperstown). He died in Winchester,Virginia and information was given that he was the son of aGerman Lutheran evangelist who made a trip in 1722 down throughthe Shenandoah Valley to North Carolina. John Martin died in1780, will recorded at Martinsburg, West Virginia named childrenJacob, John, and Elizabeth. John moved to Kentucky in 1798. Thissounds like the same minister. (Rev. Michael)

Johann Wolfhardt came to America in 1739 and settled inTulpehoken, Berks County. His son, Johann George, born in 1725and died in 1794 in Cocalico Township, Lancaster County. JohannWolfhardt who came in 1739 was born in 1695 supposedly inSwitzerland,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,......

This man (Johanna Martin Wolfarth) was commonly known as MartinWolford around Shepherdstown (VA) and was one of the firstpeople involved in the founding of the German Reformed Churchthere (ref. "On this Rock").

Martin married Elender ?? who was commonly known as Lenny. Bothof their gravestones are (very worn) in the German ReformedChurch graveyard in Shepherdstown, and I have seen them.

Martin and Lenny had three children: Elizabeth Catherine (whomarried Eli Burns (1) and Vandiver Banks (2). Elizabeth was bornin Albermarle Co., VA); Jacob (who was born in Berkeley Co.,VA); and John (who married Jenny Lapsley (1) and Mahala Lane(2). He was also born in Albermarle Co., VA and settled in KY).

I have no idea what Martin did but he was heavily involved inthe Rev War. He and my husband's ancestor, George Reynolds, kneweach other very well. It appears that Martin and George may havebeen running supplies to Washington through the war.

Martin died in 1780 in Winchester, VA. His youngest child, Johnwas only 6. Lenny married George Reynolds in 1782 inShepherdstown and went on to have another 4 sons to him. Shedied in 1822. George Reynolds was a member of the House ofDelegates and ran a successful business with his son George Jr.They seemed to have owned a lot of land and property around theJefferson Co area. George Jr married into the Lein family. Henryand John (Heinrich and Johann) were tanners and successful. Theywere responsible for a lot of the public building in the town.
